Brush With Immortality
August 22, 2008 at 8:46 pm | In Hurricanes Hockey | Leave a CommentI was in the Triangle this week. Saw some friends, played some golf, drank some beer… good times. But I never thought I’d run into one of the greatest players in hockey history along the way.
Let’s hear it for Pun!
July 25, 2008 at 9:06 am | In Uncategorized | Leave a CommentAlright, it’s been over 3 weeks since I last posted anything, and I’m sorry. With the stress of moving and life getting in the way, it’s been hard. Also, there’s been like, NOTHING going on. Well, no exactly nothing, but July, in general, is a slow sports month.
Anyways, here is Pun over at 3menandablind guy…and a humorless Yankee fan, with a special blog regarding the possible new Cubs owner. Take it away, Pun!
Coming up soon…
July 1, 2008 at 1:54 pm | In Random Sports Stuff | 1 CommentThings haven’t been as busy around here lately, but we have an abundance of things to talk about. This week, you’ll get to hear our thoughts on the Carolina Hurricanes offseason moves, if the UNC Tar Heels can live up to their preseason hype in college football, and a word or to on the reigning SEC Player of the Year, Shan Foster – and why he is my favorite second round draft pick this year.
Don’t give up on us, all these topics and more will be hitting ACC Country soon!
Sometimes it’s just not your night…

It happens in baseball more than any other sport. The stunted flow of the game lends itself to bad luck, bad breaks, and bad nights.
And on Sunday night in Omaha, it was not Carolina’s night.
While the Tar Heels were eliminated earlier this evening 6-1 at the hands of the upstart Fresno State Bulldogs, in all actuality, they lost their shot at the CWS Final by dropping their first meeting with the Bulldogs last Tuesday. Stuck in a position where they, thanks to the weather, had to win three games in three days to advance, a loss in any of them meaning elimination, the Diamond Heels used everything in the cabinet and simply ran out of gas. They gave us a helliva ride though, with exhilarating last at bat victories on Friday and Saturday courtesy of home runs by Tim Federowicz, that of the grand slam fashion, to eliminate LSU and Chad Flack to force a decisive game with Fresno on Sunday.
But nothing went right for Carolina Sunday evening. Every ball that was well hit seemed to go right to a Bulldog fielder. Every well hit ball Fresno hit found the hole. The home plate ump made some questionable calls. And our pitchers were gassed. You can only use Alex White so many days in a row before he’s not effective as usual. Same with Rob Wooten. But Carolina had no other choice. And when it came right down to it, the Heels’ bats needed Jobu and some rum, because they seemingly left men on base every inning. Credit Fresno – they were definitely the better team tonight, though I don’t think they were the better team period, if that makes sense.
Should be a fun final, but Georgia is playing excellent baseball right now and I think they take it – probably in two.
Bad News for 11 ACC Teams
June 16, 2008 at 7:24 pm | In ACC basketball | Leave a CommentTags: ACC, basketball, Carolina, Ellington, Green, Hansbrough, Lawson, NCAA, Tar Heels
Wayne Ellington, Danny Green, and Ty Lawson are all returning to Carolina.
The decision of each comes as a surprise to me, and all for differing reasons. Green’s flabbergasting decision to even put his name into the NBA draft gave me no confidence that he was getting good information from his advisors. Ellington testing the waters wasn’t much of a surprise, but the delay in withdrawing led me to believe that he was comfortable with his standing. Regarding Lawson, I’d always presumed he wanted out of school, and of the three, he seemed to be the only one in the first round – which comes along with the all-important guaranteed contract.
We Interrupt This Program for… Hockey Talk??

I know, I know, it’s mid-June, the Stanley Cup has been awarded, and we’re supposed to be talking about baseball or the GREATEST NBA FINALS OF ALL TIME KOBE IS JORDAN MVPMVPMVP GARNETT IS POSSESSED PAUL TRUTH PIERCE SASHA RANDEJO VUMAVALABITCH or whatever the hell his name is. (Sidenote: I mentioned this elsewhere, but it bears repeating… Pierce getting carried off the court in game 1 was reminiscent of Ricky Baker getting mowed down in Boyz In The Hood and Ice Cube and the gang carrying his dead body back to his house, only if Ricky had then hopped of the couch, brushed his shoulder off, and went about his business like nothing had happened.)

ACC Super Regional Update
June 6, 2008 at 5:36 pm | In Random Sports Stuff | Leave a CommentEarly results for ACC Baseball in the Super Regional are not looking good. N.C. State dropped one to Georgia, losing 11-4, while Florida State currently trials Witicha St. 10-5 with 1 out in the bottom of the 9th. Miami hosts Arizona at 7PM, while UNC hosts Coastal Carolina tomorrow. Dropping the first game does not mean that the team is finished. As I recall, UNC dropped Game 1 against South Carolina a couple of years back (or possibly last year) but rebounded to win the Super Regional and advance to the CWS Finals. It will be tougher for N.C. State, as they are playing a nationally ranked top seed on the road, but it can be done. Best of luck to all ACC teams; let’s hope for at least half of the College World Series to compose of ACC Teams.
Arrest not likely to affect Lawson’s draft status
June 6, 2008 at 4:28 pm | In ACC basketball | Leave a CommentAccording to the WRAL.com report, Lawson’s arrest is not likely to affect his draft status.
Marty Blake, the NBA’s director of scouting, said from his office in Alpharetta, Ga., that he projects Lawson as a first-round pick, and the arrest for drinking and then driving won’t affect Lawson’s status.
“It’s not going to make any difference. I think this is an isolated case,” Blake said.
Blake said many NBA clubs are looking for point guards and praised Lawson’s quickness and overall ability.
“I think he’d be drafted in the first round. He is a very good basketball player. He has very good speed,” Blake said.
“From all indications, he’ll be drafted in the first round, from what teams have told me.”
Should UNC fans take this message as a sign that Lawson is going to hire an agent? After all of the drama regarding Lawson’s arrest, it wouldn’t surprise me if Roy Williams advised Lawson to hire an agent. Could save a ton of headaches for next season. After all, this information seems pretty concrete that he’s a first round draft pick. Even without the arrest, I would say that Lawson should go. Best of luck to him if he decides to do so.
Update #3: Lawson Arrested, no DUI charge, previous violations found
June 6, 2008 at 9:32 am | In ACC basketball | Leave a CommentUpdate #3: Thanks again to THF and his readers for the following information. According to the N&O, Lawson has had 3 previous violations for speeding in which he has failed to appear in court. Oh my. Sure, these are minor violations, but it still looks terrible.
Update #2: It seems that Lawson’s revoked license was a result of Lawson not being able to produce his license during a traffic stop in Maryland. Credit to TarHeelFan for the find and State of Maryland court records for the information.

It Wasn’t a Relevant Story Then…
June 3, 2008 at 8:41 pm | In Uncategorized | 1 CommentSo, at work today, I’m getting a bit bored, and I decided to visit ESPN.com. This is usually a daily routine for me, as it is for most sports fans, to catch up on baseball scores and to see who won that CRAZY NHL Playoff game last night. Anyways, after I check out the NHL story and read about how my boy Smoltzy blew a save, I’m looking over the main stories, and I see one listed as “Report: Alou says he would have caught Bartman ball.” After reading that story, my first reaction is, “Really? This is STILL going on?”
