No preface here, as I decided to do this at the last minute. Let’s do this…
7:00: George Will says choosing a team to cheer for is a complicated process. Give me a break. Like a gazillion idiots just happened to go thru the process and choose the Sox or Yanks. Friggin bandwagoners.
7:02: Yay… Joe Morgan. Good news is he’s still rocking the Apollo Creed mustache.
7:04: Jon says Hudson should’ve won more games last year. THANK YOU BOB WICKMAN!!
Any doubters now?

The Louisville Cardinals were down 12 at the half, 44-32, unable to fully keep up with the North Carolina Tar Heels in the first half of their East Regional Final last night in Charlotte. Ty Lawson was breaking the Louisville press with ease, and Wayne Ellington was picking his spots and slashing effortlessly to the goal. However, Rick Pitino made some excellent halftime adjustments and immediately turned the game around in the second half, the Cardinals tying the game at 59 with ten minutes of basketball to be played. But for Pitino, there was one problem: Larry Bird didn’t walk through that door. Robert Parish didn’t walk through that door. Kevin McHale didn’t walk through that door.
Tyler Hansbrough did.
In-Game Thoughts/Score Updates
March 28, 2008 at 4:27 am | In ACC basketball | 2 CommentsThere’s usually nothing sweeter than the Sweet 16 during the month of March. Lots of great matchups tonight, starting with Xaiver-West Virginia (which is in progress, X-Men up 10-5 at the 14:30 mark) UNC-Washington St. (about to start at 7:27) and Tennessee/Louisville and UCLA/Western Kentucky capping the night off. I’m gonna try to update as much as possible tonight.

Interviewer: What’s your prediction for the weekend?
Me: Prediction?
Interviewer: Yes, prediction.
Me: ……….Pain.
And there will be pain. Probably in the form of stomach cramps and quick runs to the bathroom, but hopefully also in the way of two Carolina beatdowns en route to San Antonio. I don’t remember the 2005 run making me so nervous. I don’t remember being nervous last year. In fact, I only ever remember feeling this way during the ‘Canes run to the Stanley Cup in 2006. I may lose 10 pounds over the next two weeks at this rate. On with the picks:

Six weeks ago, the Carolina Hurricanes were sputtering, winners of only 5 of their previous 13 games, and fresh off a 6-1 beatdown in Raleigh at the hands of the New Jersey Devils. Their sizable division lead, built on the back of an 11-4-3 start, had evaporated. Then, on Valentine’s Day, Carolina captain Rod Brind’Amour went down with a torn ACL. At last, the hockey experts predicted, the injury bug would finally do in the Hurricanes.
Inside Basketball with Duke’s Coach K

Inside Carolina Basketball with Roy Williams comes on my FSN South feed at 8am every Saturday morning. I DVR it, because I am rarely up – or coherent – that early on Saturday. However, I was up early today and caught the show. It was lacking input from Roy himself, due to the weekend format of the NCAA Tournament. Other than that, it was pretty much the standard show: sequential highlights from last weekend thru the week, this time encompassing the entire ACC Tournament, and even yesterday’s first round game against Mount St. Mary’s. The extra basketball content, bumped the fluff piece that they usually run, but they still had time for a player spotlight (on Hansbrough for the second time this sesaon) and a quick interview thing with Dean after his being honored in Charlotte last weekend.
Krzyzewski’s show comes on right after Roy’s. While I’ve seen little of it, I’ve been told it is propaganda-like, full of spin and other such ludicrosity. Being up this morning, I figured I’d give it a look to see what the buzz was out of the Rat’s lair, particularly after their Saturday exit in the ACC Tournament and especially after their escape Thursday night. I was not disappointed.

Breaking Down the Brackets

It’s been a week since you’ve heard from me, so I promise I’ll make it up to you.
What a week. North Carolina wins the ACC Title, Georgia shocks everyone in the SEC to earn their way into the NCAA Tournament, the Big Ten continues to suck and Pittsburgh upends Georgetown in the Big East Finals. Throw in a Mt. St. Mary victory over sub-.500 Coppin State, and you know that it’s time for the Big Dance to begin. Gary Williams, Jim Boehiem, Seth Greenberg, and Herb Sendek need not worry about showing up. Let’s break this Dance down, region by region.

The Shot, The Brackets, and other randomness

The lack of excitement in the ACC’s on Friday was more than made up for on Saturday, with two dramatic semifinal contests, one decided in the final minute, and the other decided in the final second. Virginia Tech contained the Carolina offense, particularly in the second half, putting the Heels on the ropes down as much as eight and slowing the game down to a favorable pace. But Wayne Ellington hit some big shots, and then the National Player of the Year, Tyler Hansbrough, comes from 20 feet away to grab an offensive rebound on the final possession, turn around and hit the game winner with 0.8 on the clock. The subsequent fist pumping, high stomping run to mid court is probably among one of the goofiest celebrations a Tar Heel has ever done, lacking the machismo of the Stackhouse strut or the smoothness of Vince Carter’s similar high stepping glide, but the pure emotion of the moment is right at the top of the MANY reasons Hansbrough is in the process of going down as arguably the most beloved Tar Heel of all time. Yes, that includes Phil Ford and Michael Jordan.
